Opened in June 2000, it is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians only, but two days later it was closed for almost two years to correct the swaying. For this reason, it came to be known as the "Wobbly Bridge". The construction of this bridge took two years to complete. The work was £18.2 million over budget and was delayed for two months until the opening of the bridge on 10 June 2000. However, just two days later, the bridge was forced to close due to rolling caused by people crossing it. This phenomenon was somewhat similar to the rolling experienced on London's other suspension bridge, the Albert Bridge in Chelsea, and a sign on the bridge, built in 1873, warned troops marching across the bridge to increase their stride to prevent vibration.
